Patrick Janssens to Halve Kennel Size Amid Disenchantment with Greyhound Racing Landscape
Patrick Janssens is planning to cut his kennel size in half, reducing the number of runners from approximately 20 to just 10. He expressed his disillusionment with the current state of the sport, citing various concerns that have led to his decision.
"The reasons are manifold," said the former Champion Trainer of 2020. "It's not just one thing but a combination of factors. With only three of us left in the kennel, it's becoming increasingly challenging to find enjoyment in what we do."
Janssens highlighted a recent incident at Monmore regarding the PGR Puppy Derby, which was scheduled during the daytime, making it impossible for him to attend. "I spent the entire day working and had to watch the race on my phone," he lamented. "This isn't a criticism of Monmore; they've always been supportive and welcoming. But it's indicative of the broader trend. I miss the social aspect of racing, the energy of a vibrant crowd. Nowadays, whether it's daytime or evening racing, the stands are often empty."
Despite his fondness for his dedicated group of owners, Janssens emphasized the need for change. "While I'm grateful for my wonderful owners and their continuous support, I'll have to prioritize quality over quantity. There may be fewer new arrivals in the kennel as I aim to strike a better balance."
As Janssens prepares to downsize his operation, his focus remains on providing the best possible care and training for his canine athletes, ensuring that they continue to compete at the highest level.
