Patrick Janssens Dominates Premier Greyhound Racing Eclipse Semi-Finals
Patrick Janssens secured a commanding presence in Monday's Premier Greyhound Racing Eclipse Final at Nottingham, claiming victory in two of the 500m semi-finals on a snowy night at Colwick Park. With half the field representing his kennel, Janssens is in a prime position to contend for his second Eclipse title, following Slick Sakina's triumph in 2022.
Janssens’ Double Success
Romeo Steel and Romeo Command delivered standout performances to claim semi-final wins for Janssens. In the first semi-final, Romeo Steel led from the start, securing a narrow victory over kennelmate Slick Sentinel. Droopys Plunge, another Janssens-trained runner, was unfortunate to miss out on a spot in the £20,000 final, finishing third due to interference after the rail opened up at the start.
“They’ve got a great final I reckon,” said Janssens, “and it’s great to have three chances. I thought Droopys Plunge was very unlucky not be make the final. He’s a very exciting young dog who showed what he could do in the heats with a clearer run. We’ll think about a crack at the Olympic at Hove with him now – and that’s where Barntick Bear will go, too.
“It’s great to see Romeo Steel and Slick Sentinel in the final. Both have lots of speed and are very capable off the front – Slick Sakina won for Keith (Allsop) a couple of years back so it’s good for him to be back, and Dave and Nicola (Firmager) will have both Romeo Steel and Romeo Command – and what can you say about him?
“He’s been amazing – and still is. It’s still one race at a time with him since his injury, but he’s running as well as ever I’d say – the pace he showed rounding the second bend in the semis was superb, and he’s not catching off the front.”
The second semi-final showcased an impressive performance from Wicky Ned, who led from start to finish, clocking the fastest time of the evening at 29.65 seconds. Antigua Kestrel followed in second place, with Barntick Bear—another of Janssens’ contenders—securing third. Romeo Command rounded off the night by dominating the third semi-final, pulling away after the second bend to win in 29.95 seconds, comfortably ahead of local finalist Sambar Kian.
Final Preparations and Optimism
Janssens spoke highly of his team heading into Monday’s final, acknowledging the strength of his three finalists: Romeo Steel, Slick Sentinel, and Romeo Command. He praised the speed and form of his runners, particularly Romeo Command, whose recovery from injury has been remarkable. "The pace he showed in the semi-finals was outstanding, and he's back to his best," Janssens noted.
He also commended the Nottingham track staff for maintaining conditions despite challenging weather, expressing hope for improved conditions on race day.
Nottingham’s Christmas Treat for Fans
Nottingham general manager David Evans highlighted the free admission for Monday’s event, calling it “an early Christmas treat.” Racegoers who attended meetings earlier this month were also eligible for a free drink voucher, adding to the festive atmosphere.
