Magical Bluebear Shines in Kent Silver Salver Victory

Magical Bluebear etched his name into history by winning the Arena Racing Company Kent Silver Salver at Central Park, a race with a legacy dating back to Southend in 1933. Formerly known as the Thames Silver Salver, the £12,500-to-the-winner race was the highlight of a gala Saturday night meeting at the Sittingbourne venue.

Representing veteran Perry Barr trainer Billy Russell, Magical Bluebear faced fierce competition from market rival My Lennie, trained by Towcester’s Adam Sear. My Lennie, the 15-8 favourite, had posted the fastest time in the event's first round. However, 2-1 chance Magical Bluebear, supported by many, rose to the occasion.

The race began with My Lennie breaking in front, but he was quickly joined by the fast-starting Magical Bluebear. The two greyhounds were neck and neck into the first bend. Utilizing the inside line to his advantage, Magical Bluebear took a decisive lead off the second bend as My Lennie stayed wide.

In the final stretch, the Patrick Guilfoyle-bred June 22 young son of Good News surged ahead, finishing a length and a half clear of My Lennie. Droopys Standard, trained by David Mullins, secured third place. Magical Bluebear's winning time of 16.24 seconds was the fastest of the event.

The victory was a joyous moment for the Russell family. Mark, the trainer’s son, oversaw the event and collected the trophy with his family on behalf of their Midlands-based team.
