Honouring a Legend: The Michael O’Sullivan Memorial Race

Today, November 9, a special race will be held in memory of Michael O’Sullivan, affectionately known as "The Gyke" among friends and fans. A legendary figure in greyhound racing, Michael’s life was filled with stories that still bring a smile to those who knew him.

Michael, who passed away in 2010 just a day shy of his 93rd birthday, left a rich legacy in the sport. Regulars at the old Markets Field and tracks nationwide knew him well. His journey in greyhound racing began one day when, as a schoolboy, he cycled to Markets Field and, on a whim, bought a greyhound named Garryduff Nancy at auction for two guineas. Nancy’s success on the track launched Michael’s lifelong passion for the sport.

Known for his resourcefulness, Michael overcame many challenges—like the time he managed to secure a hearse to reach the racetracks during wartime fuel shortages. His remarkable contributions were recognised in 2002 when he was inducted into the Greyhound Racing Hall of Fame, followed by an honour from Limerick County VEC the next year.

While greyhound racing was Michael’s greatest love, he also excelled in other sports. He had a thriving athletic career in hurling, football, rugby, and even held the title of Handball Champion for two years at Rockwell College.

Michael’s legacy lives on, cherished by his large family and many friends who remember him fondly.
