Greyhound Track Vets Gain Insights at Practical CPD Day

Veterinary surgeons from greyhound tracks nationwide gathered earlier this month at the University of Nottingham’s School of Veterinary Medicine and Science for a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) day organised by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB). This event forms a key part of GBGB's long-term welfare strategy, "A Good Life for Every Greyhound."

During the CPD day, racecourse vets attended practical sessions and listened to expert speakers. Notable contributors included Associate Professor Richard Payne, known for his research on racing greyhounds' health, as well as GBGB’s Regional Regulatory Vets Dr Victoria Fraser and Dr Lawrence Steed. Professor Madeleine Campbell, who oversees the development and implementation of GBGB’s welfare strategy, also spoke at the event.

The day commenced with an update from Professor Campbell on the welfare strategy's progress. Associate Professor Payne followed with a talk on using data and pattern analysis to prevent injuries. Professor Campbell then led a roundtable discussion titled "What I Wish I Had Known When I Started As A Track Vet," where seasoned vets shared their experiences and advice with newcomers. The afternoon featured practical sessions on various techniques applicable in trackside scenarios, such as gait analysis.

Dr. Lawrence Steed praised the event, stating that it was a fantastic day of learning and discussion, enhancing collaborative efforts to improve greyhound welfare. Tiffany Blackett, Executive Veterinarian at GBGB, echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude to the speakers and attendees for their contributions. She emphasised that ongoing training is crucial to their welfare strategy and thanked Nottingham Veterinary School for hosting the event.
