Arthur Cornflake's Irish Derby Adventure with Patrick Godfrey

Patrick Godfrey is thoroughly enjoying his unexpected journey in the Irish Greyhound Derby, though he admits his decision to enter Arthur Cornflake in this year’s BoyleSports-backed Classic is more impulsive than carefully thought out.

Godfrey, based in Wiltshire, described it as one of the "craziest" things he’s done but said he wouldn’t change a thing. His June 2022 son of Droopys Sydney and Designer recently secured a spot in the second round of the prestigious €125,000-to-the-winner competition, finishing behind Kirby Memorial winner Knockeen Dazzler in last weekend’s heats.

Godfrey and Arthur Cornflake are set to compete in the second-round heat on Saturday. The dedicated owner-trainer will take the early morning ferry to Dublin, returning on the overnight trip back to England on Sunday. "We’ve got one of the first ferries back," Godfrey mentioned, adding that this quick turnaround suits them perfectly.

Arthur Cornflake, who had earlier notched wins at Monmore and Swindon, also claimed two victories at Shelbourne under his previous name, Dapper Rupert, before being bought by Godfrey. Now, as one of only two UK greyhounds remaining in the competition—alongside March On Freddie—Arthur Cornflake continues to hold his own among top-tier company.

Godfrey explained his decision to enter by saying, "I thought, why not? He’s good enough to compete, and he proved that in the first round." Acknowledging the importance of luck, he hopes it will be on their side for Saturday’s race. Overall, he praised the welcoming atmosphere at Shelbourne and expressed joy in taking part in such a remarkable experience.
