Sunday Round-Up - Week 2, 2024

The highly esteemed Blue Riband reaches the semi-final stage this afternoon at Towcester.

Mark Wallis and his former assistant Patrick Janssens have shared the last three finals, and both are contenders to have runners in next week’s decider.

Newinn Syd, the 9/2 second favourite in the ante-post betting, displayed an impressive first-round run, battling on the inside after a slightly slow start. Although he faced tough competition, his performance was notable, especially considering Tommys Boss (T4) recorded the quickest split of the day (4.07). Syd, having run from the black jacket only twice before, including the Olympic Final, has demonstrated faster starts, clocking 4.08 at Towcester as a pup last year.

Ower Mystery, the other heat winner, didn't exhibit significant early pace but displayed an inclination to rail, given the opportunity, despite a less favourable draw. Wasted Monday ran well, even though Syd comfortably held him. Selection: 4-6-2

The second semi-final features three heat winners, including the ante-post favourite, Romeo Command, and promises to be an exciting contest. Romeo Command is set to start as the favourite, supported by his outstanding performance last week.

The Derby runner-up is in top form, breaking well, and will exit from the same white box as two runs ago when he broke the track record. Savana Shay, despite a less-than-ideal start, showcased impressive acceleration to overtake the competition to the bend. Swift Iconic, not particularly comfortable with the track or distance, may struggle against this high-quality field. Burj Khalifa, showing potential, could challenge for a minor place if he exhibits more speed than last week. Selection: 3-4-6

In the weakest of the semis, Signet Goofy is poised to dominate. Known for his straightforward technique of blasting away and giving his all, he seems likely to secure a clear run amid potential complications on the inside of the track. While Wrighty and Whyaye Man have notable achievements, their potential to challenge each other could impact their chances. Selection: T6-T1-T2
