Signet Goofy, the Blue Riband champion trained by John Mullins, is gearing up for one last shot at the Star Sports/TRC English Greyhound Derby, with Towcester being his preferred venue.
Having triumphed in the Blue Riband at Towcester in January, Signet Goofy showcased his prowess once again during a recent sprint trial at the track, clocking an impressive 15.92 seconds for the 270m distance.
Trainer Mullins commented, “It blew the cobwebs away and he’s come out of it well. We’ll take him back there again and maybe he’ll have a race before the Derby, but he’s in great form and we know Towcester is his place.”
The four-year-old British-bred greyhound, born in January 2020, made his debut at Towcester in A5 company in July 2021, marking the beginning of a successful journey at the track. Despite initially being considered a sprinter, Signet Goofy's versatility and talent became evident over time.
Mullins reflected on Signet Goofy's journey, highlighting his surprise performance in the 2022 Star Sports/TRC English Greyhound Derby. Despite being primarily known for sprinting, Signet Goofy defied expectations and impressed in the competition, ultimately reaching the semi-finals.
Mullins expressed pride in Signet Goofy's achievements and emphasized the significance of his Blue Riband victory. Looking ahead to the upcoming Derby, Mullins remains optimistic, stating, “We’ll head back there for the Derby with him and, as usual, give it a good go. We’ll probably have about half a dozen entries but Signet Goofy and Aayamza Sydney will be our main hopes.”
