Local families flocked to Romford Stadium on Monday to celebrate the start of National Greyhound Week (NGW) with a morning filled with thrilling races and activities for all ages. The event, aimed at bringing the community together, offered a perfect blend of entertainment and education.
Children at the event had the chance to meet retired greyhounds—Marina (Mayses Marina), Bruno (Classic Bruno), and Albie (Hellofahoohah)—courtesy of Romford Retired Greyhounds. They learned about the dogs’ racing pasts and discovered first-hand how these former athletes make exceptional pets once their racing days are over. Each child also received a complimentary activity pack and a special rosette as a memento of their visit.
One parent, after interacting with the retired greyhounds, commented that the dogs were so wonderful that, if space permitted, they would welcome them all into their home.
This event marked the launch of the second annual National Greyhound Week, organised by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB), running from August 26th to September 1st. The week is dedicated to celebrating the greyhounds and the families that support the sport, with many tracks across the UK offering free entry and special activities for children and their families.
Romford Stadium has a year-round commitment to engaging families in the sport through initiatives like Romford Juniors. The stadium regularly hosts Junior Races on Saturday mornings and Bank Holidays, where children can meet different retired greyhounds and learn about their gentle and affectionate nature.
Mark Arkell, Racing Manager at Romford Stadium, expressed his delight at the success of the Family Fun Day. He noted the large turnout, including many new visitors, and was especially pleased to see children bonding with the retired greyhounds. Arkell emphasised that these events are crucial for spreading positive messages and educating the public, while also providing an enjoyable day at the races.
The NGW festivities will continue at Romford throughout the week. In addition to free entry, the track will host the GBGB Roadshow on Friday evening, featuring a free giveaway for children and an opportunity for adults to participate in the NGW Trap Challenge competition.
