England vs. Ireland in Saturday’s £175k Star Sports & TRC Greyhound Derby Final

The stage is set for an epic showdown in the 2024 Star Sports & TRC English Greyhound Derby at Towcester, where England and Ireland will each have three contenders vying for the £175,000 prize and a place in greyhound racing history.

The semi-finals on Saturday determined the six finalists, each just under 30 seconds away from glory. The draw, held during the traditional Derby lunch on Monday, confirmed the eagerly anticipated England vs. Ireland battle.

First Semi-Final Highlights:

The first semi-final saw De Lahdedah, trained by Liam Dowling, secure his place in the final with a commanding performance. Running from the inside box for the first time in this year’s Classic, he led into the first bend and maintained his lead, finishing two and a half lengths ahead of Whyaye Man. Mark Wallis's Whyaye Man and Paul Hennessy's Boylesports Bob also qualified, securing a shot at a third English Greyhound Derby title for both trainers.

De Lahdedah clocked the fastest semi-final time of 28.79 seconds (normal). Unfortunately, defending champion Gaytime Nemo and Irish Derby winner The Other Kobe were eliminated in their respective semi-finals.

Second Semi-Final Highlights:

The second semi-final was a thrilling contest, with Churchfield Syd, trained by Richard Rees, and King Memphis, trained by Liz McNair, battling it out. Churchfield Syd took the lead early and held off a strong challenge from King Memphis to win by a short head in 28.98 seconds (normal). Ballymac Gizmo, another runner from Liam Dowling’s kennel, secured the final qualifying spot, making him the youngest finalist in this year’s event.

Final Line-Up:

  1. De Lahdedah (Liam Dowling)
  2. Whyaye Man (Mark Wallis)
  3. Boylesports Bob (Paul Hennessy)
  4. Churchfield Syd (Richard Rees)
  5. King Memphis (Liz McNair)
  6. Ballymac Gizmo (Liam Dowling)

With three English and three Irish finalists, the 2024 Star Sports & TRC English Greyhound Derby promises to be a thrilling contest. Each runner has demonstrated exceptional skill and determination to reach this point, and the final on Saturday is set to be a spectacular race.
