Droopys Clue is poised for another significant victory in Saturday's George Curtis & Ballyregan Bob Memorial Final at Hove after a commanding win in the first semi-final of the Category One six-bend feature over the weekend.
Having previously triumphed in both the Juvenile Classic at Towcester and Premier Greyhound Racing St Leger at Perry Barr, Seamus Cahill's champion continued his impressive form. Following a fastest-of-the-night heat success seven days earlier, Droopys Clue set the standard at the Sussex venue with a notable 44.44sec return (-45).
As the 2-11 favourite paced up well from the inside, he never appeared in trouble. The August 2021 son of Out Of Range ASB and Droopys Natalia secured a five-length victory over the strong-finishing Ower Smasher, with Regency runner-up Swiper (Matt Dartnall) qualifying for the £10,000 decider on Saturday.
In the second semi-final, defending champion Clongeel Ozzie brilliantly overcame a challenging trap five draw with an all-round display of pace. Cutting across to the inside to lead off the second turn, the local star controlled the race and crossed the line two and a quarter lengths ahead of Haka Carlo (Nathan Hunt) and Savana Jazz (Diane Henry). The April 2020 son of Droopys Sydney and Rossroe Lady posted 45.07sec (-45) for the 740m trip, positioning himself well to defend the title.
Winning trainer Heath expressed his delight, stating, "We're all over the moon with Ozzie and just delighted with the way he's come back." Highlighting Ozzie's journey, Heath mentioned a stress fracture of his hock and the careful planning to target the George Curtis & Ballyregan Bob Memorial. Despite a racing hiatus from April to October, Ozzie's return to form has been remarkable.
Looking ahead to the final, Heath acknowledged the challenge of trap five but expressed confidence in Ozzie's ability to break well and secure a decent position. While recognizing Droopys Clue as a champion, Heath emphasized his loyalty to Ozzie, a local favorite keen on retaining the trophy.
