Wicky Ned dazzled with his pace in the Bresbet Steel City Cup, as trainer Tom Heilbron dominated half of the heats. Clocking in at 28.49 seconds, Wicky Ned delivered the second-fastest time of the year on Sheffield's 500m track, continuing his outstanding performance. With victories in both the Gymcrack and Northern Flat under his belt, Ned is pursuing his third Category One win this year, despite still having limited racing experience.
Trainer Jimmy Fenwick expressed his satisfaction with Ned’s performance. He mentioned that the track seemed slower in the earlier heats due to less favourable weather, but Ned seemed unaffected, exploding out of the traps. Fenwick highlighted that while the time was impressive, it's just the beginning of the competition, and their focus is now on preparing for the upcoming round.
Tom Heilbron celebrated three heat wins with Links Maverick (28.90), Romeo Crusade (29.03), and Romeo Cypher (29.07). He was particularly pleased with Maverick's performance, noting that many doubted him before the race, but he silenced his critics with a stellar showing. Heilbron highlighted Maverick’s earlier challenges, such as an injury in the Derby and a tough draw in Nottingham, but was optimistic about his current form.
Heilbron also spoke highly of the GB Skip Hire-sponsored match race at Romford, describing the excitement and energy of the event. He praised Star Sports' involvement, especially their acquisition of Pelaw, which he believes will bring new enthusiasm to the sport.
Both Romeo Crusade and Romeo Cypher impressed by overcoming challenging draws in their heats, showcasing their class and resilience. Heilbron’s night continued with a fourth win, courtesy of Glengar Luna.
Meanwhile, Union Rebel secured his heat victory in 28.82 for trainer Kevin Hutton, improving after a recent trial. Although Gun Slinger posted the slowest winning time at 29.22, his dramatic comeback after Acomb Felix seemed unbeatable made his performance stand out.
