Enhanced Prize for Select Stakes at Nottingham

NOTTINGHAM has announced that this year's JenningsBet Select Stakes will offer an increased prize of £12,500 to the winner, aiming to attract significant Irish interest once again. The big question is whether English Derby winner De Lahdedah will participate.

Dave Baldwin, Arc’s head of greyhound racing, reflected on last year’s memorable win by Graham Holland’s Clona Duke and expressed his belief that the Irish contenders would return. He speculated about the possibility of De Lahdedah or other top Irish-trained runners competing, particularly those who performed well in this year’s English Derby.

Baldwin also anticipated a robust challenge from the home team, noting that England had strong representation in the Derby final. He mentioned the hope that connections of Whyaye Man, Churchfield Syd, and King Memphis would join the competition.

The return of Candolim Monsoon to the track is another highlight. Currently involved in the Sussex Cup, Candolim Monsoon finished second in the Select Stakes last year. Baldwin also pointed out that Romeo Command and Droopys Clue, the Greyhound of the Year, are in Hove and could potentially participate, given their affinity for Nottingham.

Baldwin explained that the final selection of participants will be made by the Greyhound Writers’ Association from the list of entries submitted. He expressed excitement about the prospects of the race, enhanced by the increased prize money, and extended special thanks to JenningsBet, who also sponsors the Puppy Classic. The final of this event will share the stage with the Select Stakes on a thrilling Bank Holiday Monday meeting at Nottingham on August 26.
