Trainer Transitions at Newcastle: A New Chapter Begins

Newcastle Greyhound Stadium is poised for a period of reflection following Steve Anderson's announcement that he will be moving to Sheffield's Owlerton Stadium with over 30 runners. Anderson, known for the 'Bramble' prefix, is seeking a fresh challenge in the sport.

This change is part of a series of shifts at the Byker venue. Recently, trainer Harry Burton stepped down due to health issues, and Joe Edgar has taken over at the Jubilee Kennels from Tom.

A message from the Edgars on X last week conveyed their excitement about the transition. They announced, “It’s a significant day for Jubilee Kennels as our GBGB licence shifts from Tom to Joe, with Tom moving to 'semi-retirement.' After many years of racing at Workington and Blackpool, the closure of Workington led Tom to obtain his trainer’s licence in September 1998, attaching to @Newcastledogs, where he has served for over 25 years.”

His first winner, Spiral Merlin, secured a handicap victory on October 13, 1998, followed by an estimated 6,000 more winners. While daily operations remain unchanged, both Tom and Joe expressed gratitude to their owners and staff, past and present, and look forward to the future.
