New Zealand Greyhound Defence League sounds safety alarm

The Greyhound Protection League of New Zealand (GPLNZ) has highlighted serious safety issues at Addington Raceway in Christchurch. The track opened on October 17, 2023.

According to league spokeswoman Emily Robertson, the numbers are particularly alarming. In 21 days, there were 27 seriously injured dogs and one tragic death. Injuries included ruptured Achilles tendons and muscles, broken bones, and one dog had to be put down because the injuries were too serious.

Robertson emphasised that Addington Raceway has recruited a new team of track supervisors ahead of the track's opening. In job advertisements, they did not require specific specialisation to get a job, she clarified.

Addington Raceway hosts not only greyhound racing, but also motorcycle racing and horse racing.
