Farewell to Racing Legend Terry O’Sullivan

Terry O’Sullivan, the father of Barry O'Sullivan—a renowned trainer at Crayford and Central Park—passed away on Sunday, November 3 at the age of 85 after battling a prolonged illness. Known as a successful trainer in his own right, Terry made a lasting impact on the racing world.

Terry established the well-regarded schooling track in Fawkham, Kent, a training ground where countless champions, especially hurdlers, honed their skills. Together with his son Barry, Terry was celebrated for transforming flat racers into accomplished jumpers, with many champion hurdlers benefiting from their expert handling and training.

The O’Sullivans achieved remarkable wins, including Springboks, Grand Nationals, and Champion Hurdles. This year alone, Barry led Nunhead Shiv to victory in the Ladbrokes Champion Hurdle and is also participating in the Ladbrokes Grand National heats this weekend.

For today’s heats at Crayford, Barry will be represented by Jaxx Hells Angel, Traceys Sydney, and Champion Hurdle winner Nunhead Shiv in the prestigious jumps’ Classic.

Crayford racing manager Danny Rayment expressed his heartfelt condolences to the O’Sullivan family, acknowledging Terry’s legacy. He noted that Terry had been a “legend in the sport,” with the O'Sullivan name being synonymous with elite hurdles racing, especially at Crayford. Rayment praised the O’Sullivans’ schooling track near Brands Hatch for its enduring contribution to the sport, highlighting Nunhead Shiv's recent Champion Hurdle win as a testament to Terry’s influence. Reflecting on Terry's warm spirit, he fondly remembered his cheerful personality and sense of humour.

The racing community mourns the loss of a true icon, whose contributions will long be remembered.
