Farewell to Legendary Sire Droopys Sydney

The greyhound racing world received heartbreaking news yesterday as Droopys Stud announced the passing of the legendary sire, Droopys Sydney.

Widely regarded as the top sire of his generation, Droopys Sydney sired over 5,000 offspring and was honoured as Irish Stud Dog of the Year for the past three years. Among his standout progeny is Broadstrand Syd, the recent winner of the Bar One Irish Sprint Cup, who has been posting impressive times at Dundalk throughout the summer.

Droopys Sydney's influence extended far beyond Ireland. He sired two English Derby winners, Deerjet Sydney and Gaytime Nemo, and was also the sire of two finalists in the 2024 Towcester classic—Churchfield Syd and King Memphis.

His sons, Ballymac Cashout and Ballymac Bono, have continued his legacy at stud, making a significant impact in their own right. Additionally, Droopys Sydney proved to be a strong dam sire, with March On Freddie—favourite to win the upcoming JenningsBet Puppy Classic—being out of Seaglass Shadow, a Droopys Sydney daughter.

The upcoming Ladbrokes Gold Cup Final is a true testament to his lasting influence, featuring three sons and three grandsons of Sydney competing for the title. Droopys Sydney has undeniably left an indelible mark on greyhound racing, earning his place as one of the all-time greats.
