Sunderland Stadium kicked off National Greyhound Week with a lively family fun day on bank holiday Monday, drawing both seasoned racegoers and newcomers to the sport. The Newcastle Road venue hosted 12 thrilling races and a range of activities designed to entertain visitors of all ages.
Track record holder Witton Venus, trained locally by Jill Sutherst, was among three greyhounds who participated in a meet and greet inside the stadium’s main complex. Visitors also had the chance to meet Graded Greyhound of the Year Laurens Layla, while retired racers Witton Bishop and Sadie demonstrated how well ex-racers adapt to life as pets.
One of the day’s highlights was the third race, where Perfecto Farrell celebrated his first victory just days after his second birthday. The young winner greeted fans trackside, while children enjoyed various activities, including a greyhound-themed treasure hunt, a photo booth, a colouring competition, and a meeting with Reggie, the stadium mascot, who handed out rosettes to the delighted participants.
Joanne Wilson, General Manager at Sunderland Stadium, hailed the event as a huge success. She noted that their bank holiday fixtures always attract a strong turnout, and this year was particularly special as it coincided with the start of National Greyhound Week. Joanne expressed her gratitude to the team that helped make the day a success, emphasising the joy of showcasing both current racing stars and retired greyhounds who are now enjoying life as beloved pets.
