Towcester's director of racing, James Chalkley, eagerly anticipates the return of standout greyhound Bombay Birch to the Northamptonshire track for its Christmas Bonanza on December 21. This festive event, featuring highlights like the Bet365 Puppy Oaks Final, promises thrilling action and top-class contenders. Bombay Birch’s stellar performance in the English Puppy Derby last weekend has set the stage for another unforgettable appearance.
Chalkley hinted at the possibility of seeing stars like Bombay Birch and Ballymac Kobe competing again, noting Paul Young’s strong interest in bringing his talented pup back to Towcester.
“Bombay Birch is a superb prospect, perfectly suited to this track, and undoubtedly a contender for future Derbies,” he shared.
In the weekend’s race, Bombay Birch entered as the second favourite for the £10,000 prize, trailing behind Ballymac Kobe, who was the 5-4 favourite. Early on, Ballymac Kobe dominated the race, leading comfortably through the bends. However, Bombay Birch showcased an impressive turn of speed, steadily closing the gap before seizing the lead in the final stretch to secure a 1¼-length victory over Ballymac Kobe and Do Gooder. His winning time of 29.60 seconds reflected the challenging weather conditions, as Storm Bert swept across the region.
Winning trainer Paul Young commended the track staff for their efforts despite the adverse weather. He expressed gratitude for the victory, saying that it was a special moment to celebrate with family and the owners of Bombay Birch.
He added, “Weather-wise it wasn’t an easy day and well done to Kevin and Dave (Boothby) for producing a very good track – and we’re delighted to win, of course. It’s been a while but is a good feeling, and it was nice to have the family there to celebrate. I’m just delighted for his owners – they’re a good bunch and have got a nice one here! The December meeting is on our radar, and looking ahead, the English Derby is certainly a goal.”
Bombay Birch, owned by Jim Cornish, Graham Curtis, Bay Gee, and Dylan Minto, is a promising young greyhound born in February 2023. The son of Broadstrand Bono and Change Me has been unstoppable in the 500m competition, completing an unbeaten run in the Towcester final and notching his third victory in just four career starts.
Chalkley is optimistic about the upcoming Christmas Bonanza, expecting strong participation for the Night of Stars-style event. The meeting will feature eight £3,000 one-off races, kennel sweepstakes, and a live broadcast by the Gone To The Dogs – Live! team.
Reflecting on the success of similar events at Yarmouth, Romford, and Nottingham, Chalkley remarked, “We’ve got eight £3,000 one-offs plus kennel sweepstakes and the team from Gone To The Dogs – Live! will be here for a live broadcast. They’ve chosen what should be a great meeting and, having seen what they achieved at Yarmouth, Romford and Nottingham, we’re delighted they are showcasing the very best of racing.”
With Bombay Birch leading the charge, the excitement for Towcester’s December meeting continues to build, promising fans another night of high-calibre action.
