Greyhound Clona Duke Retires After an Outstanding Career

Clona Duke greyhound embodied the pinnacle of greyhound racing—a perfect blend of speed, power, elegance, and a knack for seizing victory. Throughout his illustrious career, which spanned just over two years, he consistently delivered exceptional performances, securing numerous major titles for his owner, Kevin O’Brien, and handler, Graham Holland.

Unfortunately, after battling minor setbacks that disrupted his 2024 season, Clona Duke has retired from racing. With his remarkable abilities and an exceptional bloodline, he is poised to make a significant impact in his next chapter as a sought-after stud dog.

The Beginning of Greatness

Clona Duke’s journey began in August 2022, when the son of Malachi and Coolavanny Pearl debuted in an unraced competition at Shelbourne Park. Despite being inexperienced, he clinched victory in the final, clocking an impressive 28.49.

Soon after, he entered the Juvenile Derby, competing against elite contenders. In his debut round, he missed the start but showcased his determination by surging ahead on the back straight, ultimately defeating the promising Bens Teddy by a length in 28.59. Despite his greenness, Clona Duke advanced to the final as a rank outsider with odds of 20-1. This would be the last time he was underestimated. Exploding out of trap four, he dominated the race, leaving a stellar field behind and winning by five lengths in a blistering 28.23.

Rising to the Top

Clona Duke’s next outing in the Winter Racing Festival Juvenile 525 cemented his reputation as a rising star. In a thrilling finish, he edged out Bogger Hunter by a short head in 28.53. By the time the 2023 Kirby Memorial at Limerick arrived, he had matured into a more formidable competitor, setting a scorching pace with times like 28.07 and 27.95 in the initial rounds. Although his campaign ended prematurely, his performances confirmed his status as one of the sport’s elite.

Later, at Waterford’s Select Stakes, he once again dazzled, defeating future Derby champion The Other Kobe and Callaway Pro Am in a stunning 28.22 final.

Record-Breaker at the English Derby

Clona Duke’s foray into the English Derby was nothing short of electrifying. He shattered the track record during the opening round, solidifying his place as one of the event’s favourites. In the semi-finals, he repeated the feat, earning his spot in the final. However, misfortune struck, and he finished fifth after encountering early traffic.

Triumphs in the UK

Undeterred, Clona Duke returned to the UK later that year for the Select Stakes at Nottingham. Overcoming early bumps, he triumphed against a world-class field, which included English Derby champion Gaytime Nemo and runner-up Romeo Command. Months later, he reached the Eclipse Stakes final, but bad traffic denied him another victory.

A Glorious 2024 Comeback

In March 2024, Clona Duke returned to action with a flawless performance at Cork. His prowess continued in the Easter Cup, where he breezed through the preliminary rounds unbeaten. Although he finished a commendable second in the final to his kennel companion, Clonbrien Treaty, his brilliance remained evident.

The Final Lap

As injuries sidelined him for much of the summer, his chance at the English Derby slipped away. Despite a valiant effort in the Irish Derby’s opening rounds, it became clear that he wasn’t the same dog. A decision was made to retire him, preserving his legacy as one of the greats.

A New Chapter

Clona Duke’s career was nothing short of extraordinary. With his explosive early speed, commanding presence on the back straight, and unyielding strength, he etched his name among greyhound racing’s legends. Winning 20 races, never finishing last, and consistently competing against the best, he has left an indelible mark on the sport.

As the son of Malachi and Coolavanny Pearl, and a sibling to champions like Clona Blaze and Newinn Session, Clona Duke’s pedigree guarantees his value as a stud dog. His legacy will live on, not just through his victories, but through the champions he is sure to sire.

We wish Clona Duke every success in his new role and eagerly await the next generation of stars bearing his name.
